Procustes was a rogue smith and bandit from Attica who attacked people by stretching them or cutting off their legs, so as to force them to fit the size of an iron bed.

The word Procrustean is thus used by analogy to describe, for example, situations where an arbitrary standard is used to measure success, while completely disregarding obvious harm that results from the effort.

Procrustes had a stronghold on Mount Korydallos at Erineus, on the sacred way between Athens and Eleusis. There he had a bed, in which he invited every passer-by to spend the night, and where he set to work on them with his smith’s hammer, to stretch them to fit. In later tellings, if the guest proved too tall, Procrustes would amputate the excess length; if the guest was too short Procrustes would stretch them until they died; nobody ever fit the bed exactly. Procrustes continued his reign of terror until he was captured by Theseus, travelling to Athens along the sacred way, who “fitted” Procrustes to his own bed.

Procustes era un herrero y bandido pícaro del Ática que atacaba a las personas estirándolas o cortándoles las piernas para obligarlas a caber en el tamaño de una cama de hierro.

La palabra procusto se utiliza así por analogía para describir, por ejemplo, situaciones en las que se utiliza un estándar arbitrario para medir el éxito, sin tener en cuenta por completo el daño obvio que resulta del esfuerzo.

Procusto tenía una fortaleza en el monte Korydallos en Erineus, en el camino sagrado entre Atenas y Eleusis. Allí tenía una cama, en la que invitaba a pasar la noche a todos los transeúntes y donde se ponía a trabajar en ellas con su martillo de herrero, para estirarlas hasta que encajaran. En relatos posteriores, si el invitado resultaba demasiado alto, Procusto amputaría el exceso de longitud; si el invitado era demasiado bajo, Procusto lo estiraría hasta morir; Nunca nadie se ajusta exactamente a la cama. Procusto continuó su reinado de terror hasta que fue capturado por Teseo, viajando a Atenas por el camino sagrado, quien “acopló” a Procusto en su propio lecho.
